Albert Park House 1

Brief:

We were asked to re-plan the existing heritage home and provide a design to remove the previous single storey rear extension and add a new 2 two storey contemporary extension behind the single storey heritage home.

Design Constraints:

The  heritage overlay to the site, was a constraint we had to consider, as well as building to boundaries  for the inner urban site to consider overlooking and over shadowing.

We had to strike a balance to create usable private open space at the rear and accommodate our clients brief.

Design Resolution:

The rear garden was divided into two, the new extension was constructed to the southern boundary to allow access to the sun and create a north facing back garden. The internal spaces consisted of an open plan kitchen living dining area connecting to rear yard. The plans also allow for a future swimming pool.  The new rear building was designed to be below the existing pitched roof on the front of the house, to better assist in the heritage set back requirements and respond to the surrounding neighbours.

The new first floor was zoned for the children’s bedrooms, the family bathroom, separate toilet and rumpus room. A bridge link access was created as a way to access a new attic room in the old house, and provided a split level external first floor terrace with city views.

By carefully re-planing the existing house, a guest bedroom and ensuite were created, along with the master bedroom, a study and a more quiet parents living room
