Brief:
Open up the house to expose the rear garden. The brief required complete visual access to the garden to maintain the contact with activity outside.
Design Constraints:
The existing plan shielded part of the garden with the poorly located bathroom / laundry. There was good access from both front and back of the house.
Design Resolution:
We took space from the very long existing garage to accommodate the changes in the plan. By locating the bathroom & laundry in the center of the house it opened up the rear facade to explore the garden. The space allowed us to separate a once combined bathroom & laundry to two generous spaces. The new services pod separates a noisy living space from a much quieter study, with an outlook onto a more private deck. The external shower glass wall provides a direct connection to the outside, the applied wave graphic print obscuring a perfect view. This along with the large sliding and bi-fold doors gives a blurred line between inside and out. The kitchen location was retained albeit with a complete overhaul, thus saving on relocation costs for services. The end result is a larger open plan living and entertaining area that spills out onto a generous deck with a second living space, connecting through both the visual and physical senses.
